From about 1450 to 1650 and into the eighteenth century (Golden, p. 343), Europe undergo a panic-stricken religious movement, focused on the persecution of individuals as bewitches. People were aggressive towards anyvirtuoso who was different from them and their beliefs. This in turn resulted in the idea that some were feature by the tease so causing the outbreak of witch hunts, those of which claimed the existence of thousands upon thousands of guiltless people.
In our society today when we hear witch, we automatically create a picture in our mind of an older, winkled woman dressed in a murky dress and black pointed hat with a pointed nose. We perceive them as flying on brooms and gathering in groups to conjure up potions which they mix up in a large black pot over top of a fire. This is the same image that was formulated by the Europeans during the witch-hunts. They described witches as creatures or macrocosms who have sworn a pact with the devil (King, p.414), sail through the air on brooms, wear black clothing with a black pointed hat, and have long copper and a sharp nose along with long fingers and pointed dentition (Golden, p.346). The legal age of those accused of witchcraft were elderly women whose normal trick out was a black dress and a black pointed hat.



However, in that location were many parts of Europe where twenty to twenty-five portion of those charged with witchcraft were men, and there were even some places where the majority of those indicted for witchcraft were men (Golden, p. 348). The witch hunts began with the development of the stereotypical witch in texts written by professional demonologists. One of those texts being the Malleus Maleficarum (Hammer of Witches) written by Jakob Sprenger and Heinrich Kramer, which is a guide to identifying and convicting those possessed by the devil (King, p. 414).
