Separating Church and State
The false assumption that the separation of church and declare is either a law, or a part of the joined States Constitution, is something that has plagued populace opinion for almost 225 years. The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution reads as follows,
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to call for the G everyplacenment for a redress of grievances.
Although it is important to remember that doubting Thomas Jefferson, the nations first secretary of state, second iniquity president and third president, did, in fact, advise a border of separation mingled with church and state. However, he never called for the execution of that philosophy to determine, or detract, from religious acceptance in American g everywherenment.
In Jeffersons Notes on the State of Virginia in 1785, he asks, Can the liberties of the nation be thought secure when we select removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of people that these liberties that are a gift from God? (Smith 53)
In his book, Faith and the Presidency, Gary Smith also gives an in-depth account of Thomas Jeffersons faith and religious fervor.
He discusses the former Presidents church attendance, study of the bible, and his deep commitment to prayer (Smith 55-57).
It becomes obvious, over the study of Jeffersons life as well as his Presidency, that there is no question of his religious fervor. However, the debate over the purpose of the now infamous wall of separation between church and state continues to incite controversy in public opinion.
